Menstrual Cycle Support. Chinese medicine views the menstrual cycle as a vital sign of overall health, reflecting the balance of the body's energies. The cycle is typically divided into four phases, each associated with specific energies and organ systems. Understanding these phases can enhance women's health and well-being.
-
Menstrual Phase (Days 1-5): This phase marks the beginning of the cycle, where the body sheds the uterine lining. It's associated with the Yin energy, promoting rest and introspection. Symptoms like cramps or fatigue may indicate an imbalance in the Liver or Blood.
Follicular Phase (Days 6-13): After menstruation, the body begins to build up energy, preparing for ovulation. This stage is linked to the Spleen and Kidney systems, emphasising nourishment and growth. A balanced diet and gentle exercise can support this phase.
Ovulatory Phase (Days 14-16): Ovulation signifies the peak of Yang energy. The body is in a state of vibrancy and fertility. This phase can be supported through proper hydration, fresh foods, and stress management to ensure a smooth ovulation process.
Luteal Phase (Days 17-28): In this final phase, the body prepares for potential pregnancy. Hormonal fluctuations can lead to symptoms like mood swings or bloating if imbalances are present. Supporting the body during this phase often involves addressing Spleen and Liver health, focusing on foods that regulate blood and Qi.
Chinese medicine utilises acupuncture and herbal remedies to restore balance throughout these menstrual phases. Treatment can help alleviate menstrual discomfort, regulate cycles, and support overall reproductive health by addressing underlying imbalances. Women are encouraged to track their cycles and discuss their experiences when seeking acupuncture treatment, as this information can guide personalised care.
Incorporating principles from Chinese medicine into the understanding of menstrual cycles can empower women to take control of their health and promote a sense of well-being throughout their monthly rhythms.
